With the release of SharePoint 2013, a separate Workflow system was written and integrated so that SharePoint 2013 Workflows could be leveraged across multiple SharePoint Farms, thus making it more flexible and scalable.
When you initially install Workflow Manager with SharePoint 2013, you will be installing Workflow Manager 1.0.
However, Microsoft has recently released Workflow Manager 1.0 Cumulative Update 1. As with Workflow Manager 1.0, you can install this through the Web Platform Installer.
Of course, when you attempt to install this update directly through Web Platform Installer, you will receive the following error message:
After receiving this error message, you will have to subsequently remove the Workflow Manager 1.0 Cumulative Update 1:
The installation of the Service Bus 1.0 Cumulative Update will require a restart after which you can then install the Workflow Manager 1.0 Cumulative Update 1 through the Web Platform Installer. This installation will take several minutes and also require a restart of the computer.
Once that is done, you will have successfully applied the Workflow Manager 1.0 Cumulative Update 1 for your SharePoint Server Farm.
Unfortunately, it is best to apply Workflow Manager Cumulative Update 1 before running the Workflow Configuration Wizard, otherwise, there have been many reported incidents of failures with using SharePoint 2013 Workflows after applying this update. Numerous critical errors begin appearing in the Microsoft Workflow event log after applying this update thereby causing failures in saving and publishing SharePoint Workflows.
For example, after installing Workflow Manager Cumulative Update 1, I began receiving the following error message in the Windows Workflow event log:
When attempting to publish SharePoint workflows through SharePoint Designer, I received the following error message:
Therefore, it is recommended to simply apply this update before building out your complete SharePoint 2013 Farm.
